GSS Sensors Use Solid-State, Ultra-Low Power LEDs as a Light Source to Illuminate the Target Gas.

In-house manufactured infrared LEDs are used at the core of our non-dispersive infra-red (NDIR) gas sensors to illuminate the gas.  The amount of light absorbed by the gas is detected using advanced optics and detectors, and the concentration of the gas calculated using ultra-low power electronics.

Lower Power, Faster and More Responsive.

The use of LEDs inside GSS sensors convey several advantages over conventional light sources. They are much lower power enabling sensors to run on battery power alone for years.  They are faster and more responsive, making them suitable for ultra-fast CO₂ measurement in medical and life science applications.

In-House Manufactured LEDs and Photo-Detectors Provide the Foundation for Optimal Sensor Performance.

GSS has a long track-record of developing and manufacturing advanced mid-infrared LEDs and photodetectors using its state-of-the-art molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) facility in the UK.  Light emitting diodes (LEDs) and the companion Photodiodes (PDs) detectors are semiconductor devices are formed by sequential epitaxy of semiconductor layers onto the surface of a crystal substrate using a molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) reactor.  LED radiation is generated in the active layer and the emission wavelength of the LED and the spectral response of the PD are determined by the energy gap of the material in the active layers. 

 

In-House Manufactured LEDs and Photo-Detectors Deliver Uncompromised Sensor Performance.

GSS ambient CO₂ sensors have been optimised for use in battery power applications where the short start-up time and low power consumption of LEDs offer significant advantages. Due to the very rapid power-up and response time, for sensors targeted at power sensitive applications, GSS has chosen to ‘pulse’ the LED rather than run the LED at constant current. This strategy eliminates the effects of background IR and can reduce power consumption by over 95% compared to constantly powering the LED.

GSS sensors owe their high-speed response to several factors including fast electronics with practical but flexible digital filtering and short optical pathlengths minimizing gas stagnation volumes.

Combined with their accurate, high speed and resolution sampling features, they provide the user with the ability to analyse CO₂ waveforms with unmatched fidelity.
